WE ARE ABOUT to discover the transforming power of one of the three inventions mentioned above, that of printing. Our brains are ready to begin reading by mid-childhood, just as they were for members of cultures several thousands years before books were ever available. But, unlike learning to speak, literacy doesn’t automatically happen. Something has to motivate us, and it had to motivate whole cultures as well.
